This was a game from the first of FOUR consecutive playoff battles between New York and Miami. They would go on to play each other in 98, 99 and 2000 – with every series being intensely fought (sometimes literally!). 2 teams with a lot of history, and a lot of genuine hate for each other. Division rivals – finished 1st and 2nd in the Atlantic – and right behind Chicago in the conference overall. So here we are: Wednesday May 14, 1997. Conference Semis. Game 5. The Knicks are 3-1 up. They’ve been playing great. Now ONE WIN AWAY from the Conference Finals. Jeff Van Gundy is one win away from eliminating his former mentor Pat Riley. Patrick Ewing is ONE WIN away from meeting Michael Jordan and the Bulls for what would be his best shot at beating MJ. Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning have history. Chris Childs and PJ Brown have history. Ewing and Zo. I could go on but you get the idea. There was a lot of drama between these 2 teams. And now Game 5. A defining moment. A turning point. Just like Game 6 of the 94 Finals – another game that Knick fans will always look back and wonder ‘what if?’

Boy dey really hate each other….
Fight starts at 7:50
Is that Doc Rivers doing commentary?
Fun rivalry.
@greglakay
Agreed, stupid of the Knicks bench to leave the bench, when Wallace had already took down PJ Brown.
First Ward went under brown and tried to hard to block him out
The league was so much more aggressive back then
Where da B Ball Da rialvries da intensity in nowadays games. No PPl Wanna be we all da world team Like da Heat n others. Bring back 90′s b ball
Look how Ward was boxing out PJ Brown at the knees. I don’t think he deserved to be flipped but he definitely needed to be put in check some how.
So my boy baldheadkid just told me how he started dunking, he s not even as tall as me but jumps over a foot higher! Apparently he took the program over at “50-inch-vertical(dot)com” and gained over 16 inches in his vertical leap!
Charlie Ward deserved it. Ward was clearly boxing out in a highly unusual, premeditated manner, shoving his butt right into PJ Brown’s knees. He deserved to be tossed around like a rag doll, and boy was he. Good work PJ.
the rivalry was awaken with melo and billups being a part of the knicks
I love John Starks but he is so stupid at time. Get a technical for no damn reason.
lol they bogus 4 the kobe dis lets c if he shoots an airball
Same with the 70s and 80s. They were truly tough unlike todays tatted up NBA wannabees. They played for passion and winning the game and not for million dollar contracts. Check some Lakers Celtics games from the mid 80´s. They were really intense and it was all about winning.
why are these analyst blaming PJ for that?, the game was out of reach so there was no need for Ward to try and grab that rebound he was clearly going for Browns knees
HE FLIPPED THAT DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
90′s players is all about BASKETBALL…
today’s players are just all about money…
@antonioaquilino77777 Lol perhaps I was a little strong. I was just pissed that Lebron has been playing to this half-empty arena when he could have been playing to great crowds in New York or Chicago.
geting thrown…..
sound like a young doc rivers
P.J. Brown sent cuz flying!
@thejohn95 FUCK U PIECE OF SHIT U DONT WANT NONE OF MIAMI SO GO LIVE IN UR SHITHOLE MIAMI IS THE BEST CITY IN THE USA. 305 TILL I DIE
Fuck those Miami scum. Bandwagon shit
@jipeon That’s not boxing out, that’s dirty. Anyone who can’t see that is blind.
